My name is Samantha. I am a year 5 and this year I am going to Enrich every Monday. Enrich is a place where you learn. I enjoy playing learning games on the computer and the games that Katie sends us in the mornings. My favourite game on the computer is Factory Balls and Me and the Key2. I enjoy doing maths because I am on stage 6-7 at school. I like Enrich because I get to do a lot of fun things there.

Gifted Study
Search, copy, paste. Hello again! Everybody at Enrich is working on this. Can you guess what it is? If you guessed a famous gifted person study, you are right and that is what my blog is about today. My famous gifted person is... Valerie Adams. She is gifted because of her amazing ability at. She persisted with her shotput, because she never gave up, and has been competing since she was 14 years old. She remained open to continuous learning because she has has changed coaches, and she has listened to other people's advice about how to be the best at shotput. She has definitely strived for accuracy, because she is now the number one female shotputter in the world! She is the World and Olympic Champion! shotput

Pots and lots
Clay! I made a new plate and painted and underglazed my other pots that I made. I do it for passion time. I try a way to make it without the wheel. I tried something different than I usually do. Madison's pot broke because she dropped it. since she dropped it she had to make a new one. The pot that she dropped was painted in black and white stripes with some purple on the inside. I liked that pot. A teacher liked my rainbow pot. I know it was Katie or Nicola. It was lots of fun making pots and I think that I will do pots next year.

Clay!
Really? Yes I did clay today with Grace. We made plates, bowls, cups, pots and pans. I have given you some photos of some of my work. I made three cups, three pans, three plates and three bowls. As you might think, I am making a tea set. Madison has just joined us today. She made a pot with a lid. Madison, Grace and I are the only ones doing clay at Enrich. We do it for talent development/passion time. I enjoy doing clay. Yup, I have pretty much finished doing my blog today.Bye!

Multi-coloured prints!
Today for art I kept working on my lino prints. Today I had to cut out the lines of my actual design so that I could use a paper print of one colour that I've already done, and then re-use it with the new based and another colour on my next print to make a multi-coloured print! Katie came over to see what I was doing and she decided to have a go as well. She said it was really fun. You have to be very accurate, as you have to chisel out every single bit so that your next print will turn out perfect!

Chess and Art
I am going to the chess tournament in Dunedin on Saturday because I am fourth on the leader board for the Wednesday group. I have learnt that you can play without the Queen because everyone was relying on their Queen to do all the work. Unless the King was in check-mate. For talent development I continued with my lino prints. I printed 7 lino prints and used three different colours which were orange, pink and light purple. They looked GOOD when I finished.I still have to do eleven lino prints.

i-Pads
"Poetry again". I said to myself. It was my last day of poetry today. Today we were publishing our poems on the i-Pads. We used the app called Pic-Collage. I have written three over the last three weeks. One of my poems was about chess, another was about yucky KFC and the last one was about squishy, squashy, yummy marshmallows. Here they are in their published form:

The Pit
The Pit! This is a hole that you can fall into when a problem you are having gets out of control. If you are feeling angry, confused, nervous, sad, or stressed, sometimes all these feelings can build up and put you in the pit. You go from being very happy, and then maybe you are confused that you have a problem, and before you know it, you're in the pit. You can get out of the pit by having strategies to help you. These will help you climb out slowly. One of the best strategies is asking for help, or telling someone about how you are feeling.

Can I please be the spare Queen?
Today at Enrich we played some chess. I went with Katie to have a battle on the GIANT chess board! There were quite a few kids, so we split into teams. I was on the white team. My first question topiKatie was "Can I please be the spare Queen?" Katie reminded us not to set up whole lines of chess pieces - it's not a good plan. Also, we had to think where we were putting each piece, and tell Katie what our game plan was. I got to go first! My opening move was to move the Queen's pawn forward one space - this made room for my bishop to get out. By the end of the 20 minutes, our team had the white team in trouble! We had our Rook in position, backed up by the Queen. We were only a few moves away from checkmate! The answer to Katie's question was "Yes - if we need a spare Queen, you will have to jump on the chessboard!"

Chess
Today at Enrich we did some chess lessons with Katie. We could choose to do an advanced lesson with Darryn or a beginner lesson with Katie. I went to Katie's lesson. In Katie's lesson we spit into two teams. I was on Katie's team - white. Katie showed us how she starts her game of chess and gave us tips along the way. The game kind of started getting interesting. She said that you have to make sure you back up your players with another piece so that they are guarded. We all had turns to move a piece. We had to say why we were moving the piece to certain locations. You had to keep thinking ahead!

APPLES!
We did some sketching today. We had some basic objects and we had to sketch them out on paper. Next,we had to paint them. I like to paint - it is one of my hobbies, but my best hobby us reading, but we're not talking about that now! Back to painting. I used black, white, yellow, green, red, blue and orange. Can you guess what I painted today? If you guessed an apple... you are correct! The biggest challenge was to get the right shape of the apple!

Let's talk about art and Keynote...
Art today was with Jenni because Darryn wasn't here today. We usually go with Darryn. We kind of made a rainbow today. I did all 3 colours today: red, green and blue. You had to make the dark shade of it, and then blend it out to the lightest shade. The colours you had to work with were - yellow, red, blue, white and black. We did this to learn how to blend your colours so that you get the right shade that you need.
After morning tea, we played chess. I played Norton. I won! I went from 25th place on the leaderboard up to 10th place!
I went to the Keynote workshop with Katie. She taught us how to make a Keynote which is to help you show your work to other people. I learned how to make different bits of information fly in and out of my screen!

Art with Darryn.
Today was the first day of talent development. There were three choices art with Darryn, Performance with Nicola, and MADE Awards with Katie. I chose art. Darryn asked us what the primary colours are. We said: yellow, blue and red. Darryn said that those 3 primary colours can make EVERY colour. Those 3 colours CAN'T be made from other colours. We spent some time today on basic skills - blending colours. By the end of this project, we hope to have our own art exhibition set up. There will be heaps of different types of artwork on display.

Drama was what we did this morning. My drama teacher was supposed to be Nicola but she was not here today. So Katie took us for drama today. She taught the whole class drama games. The first fun game we played was called 'One Word Story'.That one was my favourite game. You play this game by: Getting 3 people up on stage. One person starts the story by saying ONE word. Then the next person adds another word, then the third person adds another word. You have to keep going! The next game was called 'Colour Line'.You have 6 people up on stage, and they have a colour. They all say their colour and then the audience closes their eyes, and the colour line gets muddles up. The audience then has to guess the new colour line. If they get it right, then they get a new colour and join the line, and the game starts again.

bumpy games
BUMP! Part of our drama today, was a game called 'Musical Bumps'. It's a bit like musical chairs, but instead of a chair, you have to sit down really quickly on the floor! It was really bumpy! Another game we played was "I packed my bag, and in it I put..." The aim of this game was to remember all of the things and say them back. So, Nicola started and she said "I packed my bag, and in it I put... pajamas" By the time it was my turn, I had to say "I packed my bag and in it I put pajamas, a book, shoes, a hat, a soccer ball, a laptop, a soft toy, my clothes, a bag of make up, my house, a toothbrush, a hairbrush,a big chocolate bar AND I ADDED... the world." It would have to be a really big suitcase to fit in the world! After morning tea, we played leaderboard chess. I played Luca. It was a busy game, but Luca won. It was okay though, because I was already lower than Luca on the leaderboard.

Today at Enrich I played a Wilson game called the hoop game. There were three people. In my team I had Luca, Mat and I. There was seven groups. There was a coloured hoop for each team. We got a red hoop. The rules were you had to hold hands and keep your feet together.

Darryn's Pig's Eye Workshop.
Yuck, Yuck, Yuck! A pigs eye! Today I went to Darryn's eye dissection workshop. We studied a pig's eye! We studied the parts of the pig's eye. My favourite part of the pig's eye was the blind-spot - which your brain fills in for you! Your eye actually has some goo inside the coloured bit of your eye, (that is the iris). The goo is liquid inside your eye that helps you see. Outside your eye there is a lot of fat that connects your eye to your head. We looked at the pig's eye close up and everything was really big because we used a dinoscope, which is not a scope that a dinosaur uses - it is a tool that you use to see things close up. The dinoscope was attached to the computer, so we got to see everything that Darryn was doing on the computer screen. We cut up the eye with a razor-blade so we could see all the parts inside the pig's eye. I did not like the part in the middle because it was a bit like jelly and it frightened me! Darryn also got a piece of paper with a yellow square and a green square. On the yellow square, there was a cross (x) and on the green square, there was a dot (.) Darryn put the piece of paper in front of us. We had to look at the cross and then he moved it closer to us until we couldn't see the cross anymore. This was showing us that we have a blindspot and where it is. Most people were too scared to go and see the eyeballs, so only about 10 or 9 of us did it.

My busy day today...

Today, this morning eye parts was a before school pick. You had to drag the eyeball parts to the different boxes and then when it was finished, the eyeball repaired itself. At environment time we worked on our mural. Katie got us a big big of plywood and she painted it white for us. Then, Daniel and I painted it blue and then Emma and Rhea did another coat of blue and then they put a bit of white in it as well. It was a really nice shade of blue. When we washed out the paint brushes, we saw a beautiful blue river flowing down the drain. We did Thinkers Keys after morning tea. I went to Katie and Darryn's one. Katie's was the RIDICULOUS key - Katie would say something ridiculous and we had to say the benefits of it. One of them was 6 YEAR OLDS ARE ALLOWED TO DRIVE CARS. Darryn's one was the BRAINSTORMING key. Some of the brainstorm ideas were how to cool down: I thought of putting ice in your coffee and maybe going to Antarctica, a water playground, have a freezing shower, stand outside in the wind and have a bath filled with ice. Now I am going to dissect a real pig's eye with Darryn! I wonder what it will look like?

Mural
Today, we had a really small class! I am part of a mural group with Emma, Daniel and Rhea, but they weren't here today. So, I started making a plan of my own. Katie and I printed off lots of pictures of things we wanted in the mural: kiwis, koru plants, silver ferns, museum roof, tuatara and the water tower. We then got 2 big bits of card and we started sketching out what it will look like. When the other kids get back, I will show them the plan I did. Katie is going to get us some canvas boards and we are going to paint our mural on them and then display it in our classroom. We aren't going to paint our mural on the outside wall anymore, because all the artwork we've got on the walls now, will be taken down, so our walls will be very bare, so our mural will stay on the wall and look very good and help decorate our classroom!

Teacher Comment
Hi Samantha.
Wow, it was a busy day today! Great to see you challenging different people each week at chess - it’s great to play a variety of people so you can pick out strategies of their game that might work for you! You did a super job constructing your parachute - you worked on your own, and were still finished before the pairs! The parachutes all worked well. I wonder how you will design your parachute next week? Well done on your debating today. I know you wanted to be on the opposing team, but you got on with the task of presenting an affirmative point for your group. I was really impressed with you effort in contributing to your groups Keynote presentation for the ILT to ask for permission to paint a mural. We will continue with this next week. Well done on a great day Samantha! Katie.

Elephants toothpaste
Today at Enrich we had to choose from three high interest stations. There was chemistry, Biology and cartooning. I chose Chemistry with Jenni because I hadn't done the science before and it looked exciting and cool. We made elephants toothpaste (which isn't really toothpaste for elephants!)
It is made of hydrogen peroxide, water, dishwash yeast and foodcolouring.
Here is a video showing what happens.

Week three
The first thing we did was chess. I played against Jacob and he won. After that I went to a high interest station and it was maths and we were making tessellations I got mine completed and it was of fish now I just need to finish getting all the colour in it so it can go up on the wall. My pattern would also have worked for parrots.I liked making the tessellation.
We also decided on our environment projects today and we are going to paint murals and make the alley at enrich into a really cool outside space we can use.

Week 2 at Enrich
Today we did a technology challenge. The challenge was to make something that would launch a shuttlecock. I worked with Thomas and Eddie. It felt a bit like I wasn't included. Maybe I need to explain my ideas more so that I am listened to? We are going to judge these launchers in a moment. I don't think our group will win because we needed something stronger to make our launcher work. Our launcher is a slingshot.

First day back for Term 3
Today we played a Wilson game. After the Wilson game we went to a high interest station. I was with Darryn doing Maths - tessellations. A tessellation is a maths pattern that has no spaces and the pattern keeps on going. After the maths tessellation we had morning tea. After morning tea, we talked about the environment. Environment is our new concept this term. There is a secret land in Mumbai where people throw away their rubbish and people live there. It isn't very nice there.

TTToday I did my reflection on a sheet. In this blogyou will see a picture of my reflection at the end of this!
The reflection tells you about what I am proud of and what I have been learning about this term.
Today we have also finished off our Tapa cloth and the other group finished their Kowhaiwhai panels.
I also played a hoop game and you have got to try and get to the other side of the room with your feet stuck together like glue. We also had to hold hands and you aren't allowed to slip over or you will have to go back to the start.

Chess
At chess time, I played a game of chess with Jacob. I lost the game and I was white and Jacob was black. He said he wanted a rematch but I didn't want a rematch because I wanted to play with someone else. The top six on the chess leaderboard gets to go to the chess tournament.

Today at Enrich.
Today at Enrich we played a game to start - you were in a hoop with a buddy and you had to tap the balloon one at a time to the end of the walkway. In Drama we were adding sound effects to our plays. We did some habits of mind today - one of them was managing impulsivity - that means you need to stop and think. This afternoon, I added some new things to my blog.

Today at Enrich@ILT for talent development I went to Darryn and we recorded our play using Garageband so that we could hear ourselves. I thought it was very cool, because I had never seen anything like it! After Darryn, I went to Katie May for P4C. In P4C we talked about where we should fight and where we should not fight. I think it is OK to fight in World Wars or in self defense. This is a picture.

Kiaora Samantha,
Boy did I get a run for my money by playing you in Pentago! I was so so impressed with your strategy and thought level...it wasn’t until the 5th game that I finally beat you! I definately need to get some practise in. Did you enjoy your first round of talent development? It is going to be a busy time ahead with it, but filled with lots of new learning and great experiences!
See you next week

Blokus
Today at Enrich, I played a game called Blokus. You have to try and get all your coloured pieces onto the board before the other players do. You can play with four players because there are four colours. The colours are: red, yellow, blue and green. My favourite colours out of them are yellow and red. You start in the corners and place a piece. You can only move diagonally, never straight. You have to try and block the other players path.
